OUR MISSION

To give audiences bold, unique and emotionally moving theatrical experiences. The company uses a unique working process to ensure that each and every one of its performances is a “live” experience. Our process rejects the standard practice of repeating choreographed choices but instead encourages our performers to follow their instincts in every moment allowing the story to unfold differently every time it is performed. The company is also dedicated to collaboration between Canadian and international artists to create work that focuses on the art of performance.

A BRIEF HISTORY

Actors Allan Hawco and Philip Riccio founded the Company Theatre in 2004. We produce intensely performed theatre that is appreciated by both audiences and critics alike. Our first production, A Whistle in the Dark was called “one of the best things ever seen in Toronto” by Robert Cushman (National Post) and played to sold-out houses. It was later remounted in Toronto and toured to St. John’s. It marked the first of many collaborations with Irish director Jason Byrne. One of those collaborations, the Canadian premiere of the acclaimed play Festen (2008), was equally embraced earning three Dora Award nominations for Oustanding Production, Direction and Performance in a leading role. Our productions of Marion Bridge (2007) and Through the Leaves (2010) both received Dora Awards, the later for Outstanding Independent production.

In the fall of 2010 we were invited to be a Berkeley Street Partner with Canadian Stage. Our first partnership was the English language premiere of Swiss playwright Lukas Barfuss’ The Test starring Eric Peterson and Sonja Smits. Our second co-production will be Andrew Bovell’s Speaking in Tongues, on stage from Oct. 29-Nov 24th.
