To push artistic boundaries by creating innovative theatre that is exhilarating, stimulating, and emotionally moving for audiences and performers alike.
OUR MISSION & VISION
The Company Theatre’s mission is to produce fresh work that constantly contributes to raising the standard of Canadian theatre through the art of performance. The company, formed in 2004 with two actors at its artistic core, is committed to the principles of collaboration between Canadian and international artists to create work that pushes artistic boundaries. Audiences are always presented with a bold, unique, emotionally moving theatrical experience that is at the leading edge of Canadian theatre.
From our first production four years ago, The Company Theatre has effectively proven there is a need in our community for the work we are doing. We produce bold, emotionally moving, impeccably performed theatre that audiences and critics love. Both A WHISTLE IN THE DARK (2005) and FESTEN (2008) were voted onto the yearly lists of “Best of” theatre productions by The Globe and Mail, National Post, and eye Weekly. A WHISTLE IN THE DARK was then remounted in 2007 and played to sold-out houses in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Toronto where it received such accolades as “one of the best things ever seen in Toronto” by Robert Cushman from the National Post. Our recent production of FESTEN received equally strong feedback from eye Weekly’s Christopher Hoile, who said the production was “an absolutely shattering experience… it is simply breathtaking ( out of five) and J. Kelly Nestruck from
The Globe and Mail who called it “MASTERFUL”.
In 2007 we produced the Toronto premiere of Daniel MacIvor’s MARION BRIDGE. Directed by MacIvor it was a beautiful production of his play about three sisters who come together to care for their dying mother. The production received a Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Lead Performance Female, for Sarah Dodd. Overall our body of work has received six (6) Dora Mavor Moore Award nominations, including two (2) nominations for Best Production.
Seeing the work we produce and the response it elicits attracts celebrated Canadian artists such as Eric Peterson, Nicholas Campbell, Caroline Cave, and Joseph Ziegler, as well as internationally renowned director Jason Byrne, to repeatedly collaborate with the company. Stratford Festival veteran Jonathan Goad believes “in 14 years as a professional actor working with many companies, including some with deep resources, The Company Theatre stands out as my finest experience… extraordinary”. Companies early in their careers rarely attract this level of artistic talent while regularly maintaining a high standard of excellence.
